Introduction to Etched Linocut (Weekend Course)

Scarlett Rebecca

Etched lino is a fabulous process that can transform the way you approach relief printing. Relief printing can sometimes feel quite restrictive in terms of the marks you can achieve, they can be quite graphic with clean edges, you’re also very much in control of the image so there aren’t many surprises. Etched lino is full of surprises, in a way you’re collaborating with the etch and giving over a bit of control to the etch.

The process of etched lino involves applying a caustic soda based solution to the lino to breakdown the lino, leaving scarred marks and organic recesses. You can control where the caustic etch with eat away using resists applied to the lino.

During the weekend you will be introduced to the basics of etched linocut and you will have two lino blocks to work with. Relief printing can sometimes feel quite restrictive in terms of the marks you can achieve, they can be quite graphic with clean edges. You're very much in control of the image, there aren’t many surprises. This method of printmaking allows for an enormous range of mark making with tonal variation, that can be combined with carved marks. You will finish the weekend with a small edition of prints and proofs.

Carving tuition will not be a part of this course and previous experience of linocut is not essential, but please bring along your carving tools if you wish to.

During this weekend course we will cover:
