For this month’s Etc Artist Talk, Draw’s Head Tutor Jake Spicer will be talking with artist Charmaine Watkiss. The event is free and everybody is welcome, so please feel free to share this link as widely as you would like.
Charmaine Watkiss RWA is a British artist whose practice investigates the botanical legacy of the Caribbean and tracing the lineage to Africa. She is particularly interested in healing traditions handed down through the matrilineal line. Charmaine constructs narrative responses to material found in public archives – her compositions of women use her own likeness as a way of enacting what she calls ‘memory stories’, channelling a multitude of strong female archetypes in order to inform her works on paper, some as large as life sized.
Charmaine Watkiss completed her MA in Drawing at Wimbledon College of Art in 2018, and her work is held in private and public collections including The British Museum, London; The Wellcome Collection, London; The Government Art Collection, London; Cartwright Hall Museum, Bradford; Abbott Hall Museum, Kendall; The Holburne Museum, Bath; The Lincoln Museum, Lincoln & Nasher Museum at Duke University, Durham NC USA.
Charmaine is currently showing work as part of Artists First at the National Portrait Gallery, London until August 2026, and Plant Dreaming at Leeds Art Gallery until 19th April 2026.
